Carrie Underwood – Silent Night: Lyrics and Meaning

Silent Night is Track 11 on Carrie Underwood’s album My Gift.

Silent Night Song Lyrics:

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing ‘Alleluia
Christ the Savior is born
Christ the Savior is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth

Silent Night Song Meaning:

202 years ago “Silent Night” was first heard by Austrian villagers attending Christmas Eve mass in St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf.

It’s a song about a calm and bright silent night, and the wonder of a tender and mild newborn child, words written in 1816 by a young priest in Austria, Joseph Mohr, not long after the Napoleonic wars had taken their toll.

The story is that the priest went for a walk before he wrote it, and he looked out over a very quiet, winter-laden town. He was inspired…the town was at peace.

It was Christmas Eve, 1818, when the now-famous carol was first performed as Stille Nacht Heilige Nacht. Joseph Mohr, the young priest who wrote the lyrics, played the guitar and sang along with Franz Xaver Gruber, the choir director who had written the melody.

The composition evolved, and was translated into over 300 languages with many different arrangements for various voices and ensembles. It was sung in churches, in town squares, even on the battlefield during World War I, when, during a temporary truce on Christmas Eve, soldiers sang carols from home. “Silent Night,” by 1914, known around the world, was sung simultaneously in French, German and English.

The English version of “Silent Night” is typically sung in three verses corresponding with the original verses 1, 6, and 2.

Carrie Underwood – O Come All Ye Faithful: Lyrics and Meaning

O Come All Ye Faithful is Track 10 on Carrie Underwood’s album My Gift.

O Come All Ye Faithful Song Lyrics:

O come all ye faithful
Joyful and triumphant
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem
Come and behold Him
Born the King of Angels

O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
Christ the Lord

Sing, choirs of angels
Sing in exaltation
O sing all ye citizens of heaven above
Glory to God, glory in the highest

O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
Christ the Lord

Yes Lord, we greet Thee
Born this happy morning
O Jesus, to Thee be all glory given
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing

O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
Christ the Lord

O Come All Ye Faithful Song Meaning:

This popular Christmas Hymn tells of the biblical story of the birth of Christ. It is considered a reference to the shepherds, after hearing the angels singing, coming to Bethlehem to adore their new-born savior.

Today this hymn signifies and celebrates our coming together in worship to adore the loving blessing of Jesus, as he sacrificed himself for our salvation.

Carrie Underwood – Away In A Manger: Lyrics and Meaning

Away In A Manger is Track 09 on Carrie Underwood’s album My Gift.

Away In A Manger Song Lyrics:

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head
The stars in the sky looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay

The cattle are lowing, the poor Baby awakes
But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes
I love Thee, Lord Jesus; Look down from the sky
And stay by my side till morning is nigh

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me I pray
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care
And take us to Heaven to live with Thee there

Away In A Manger Song Meaning:

Written in the late nineteenth century, Away In A Manger is a classic Christmas carol and a favorite to many. It centers around the adoration of the newborn baby Jesus.

The vast majority of early hymnals, including the earliest known to us, cite the words to German Protestant reformer, Martin Luther. Many go so far as to name the carol “Luther’s Cradle Song” or “Luther’s Cradle Hymn”, to describe the English words as having been transposed from Luther.

The claim of Luther’s authorship remained to be made well into the twentieth century, but it is now discarded as false for various reasons. For instance, no text in Luther’s known writings corresponds to the carol. Also, no German text for the hymn has been discovered from before 1934, more than fifty years after the first English edition. That German lyrics read awkwardly and seem to be the result of a translation from the English original. It is now believed that Away In A Manger is a wholly American song.

Carrie Underwood – Mary, Did You Know?: Lyrics and Meaning

Mary, Did You Know? is Track 07 on Carrie Underwood’s album My Gift.

Mary, Did You Know? Song Lyrics:

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know
That your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered
Will soon deliver you

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will calm a storm with His hand?
Did you know
That your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little baby
You’ve kissed the face of God
Mary, did you know
Oh Mary, did you know

The blind will see
The deaf will hear
And the dead will live again
The lame will leap
The dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb

Oh Mary, did you know
That your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know
That your baby boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven’s perfect lamb?
The sleeping child you’re holding is the great I am

Oh, Mary did you know?
Ooh, ooh Mary did you know?
Mary did you know?

Mary, Did You Know? Song Meaning:

Mary, Did You Know? was written by a comedian, Mark Lowry, in 1984. In the words of Lowry, “As my mind went back to the manger scene, I began to think about the power, authority and majesty she cradled in her arms. Those little lips were the same lips that had spoken worlds into existence. All of those things were contained in the young child lying quietly on her bosom. Even now, he was the very one who had given life to his mother, Mary.” Lowry said this song came about with that thought in mind. He began to write down questions he would like to ask Mary like, “do you know who is in your arms? Do you know what He is going to do? Do you know how important this tiny baby is?” Questions like that became the basis of the song, which quickly became beloved by many.

Carrie Underwood – O Holy Night: Lyrics and Meaning

O Holy Night is Track 06 on Carrie Underwood’s album My Gift.

O Holy Night Song Lyrics:

O Holy night
The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
‘Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn
Fall on your knees
O hear the Angel voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine, O night
O night divine

Truly He taught us to love one another
His law is love and His Gospel is Peace
Chains shall He break, for his child is our brother
And in His name, all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we
Let all within us Praise His Holy name
Christ is the Lord; Their name forever praise we
Noel, Noel
O night, O night divine
Noel, Noel
O night, O holy night

O Holy Night Song Meaning:

O Holy Night was written by poet Placide Cappeau in 1843 in southern France. The music for the song was composed by the prolific French composer and music critic, Adolphe Adam and in 1855 the song was translated from French to English by John Sullivan Dwight.

Near the end of 1843, a church organ in southern France was renovated. Even though Cappeau showed no interest in religion, he was asked by the parish priest to write a Christmas poem; which he did. Shortly thereafter, Adam wrote the music and the song was first performed in 1857.

O Holy Night is one of the most well-known Christmas carols reflecting on Jesus’ birth and the redemption of humanity. There’s truly nothing better than hearing an old-fashioned Christmas song right around the holidays. One of those classic hymns is ‘O Holy Night.’ It brings up such great memories and thoughts of our Savior, Jesus Christ. It was truly a glorious night when Jesus was born. The angels rejoiced and the whole world received their King. God granted us eternal salvation when He sent His Son to die for our sins.

Carrie Underwood – Hallelujah: Lyrics and Meaning

Hallelujah is Track 05 on Carrie Underwood’s album My Gift and features John Legend.

Hallelujah Song Lyrics:

Ooh, in the winter’s chill
Let the candles light the night up from the windowsills
Ooh, as I draw you near
And we whisper all the sweet sounds only we can hear
On the coldest evening in this December
I hold you in the heat of the glowing embers

Let the world stand still, the church bells ring
Silent night as the angels sing
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Let the magic warm the moonlit air
Hear the choirs join in singing everywherе
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Ooh, let thеre be peace on earth
Let the lonely join together, let them know their worth
Ooh, let the children know
There’s a brighter day ahead, let’s hold on to hope
And on the coldest evening in this December
Let us pray the spirit of love will linger

Oh, let the world stand still, the church bells ring
Silent night as the angels sing
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Let the magic warm the moonlit air
Hear the choirs join in singing everywhere
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Glory, glory, glory I’m so glad to have you here
And may this Christmas moment last for years

Let the world stand still, the church bells ring
Silent night as the angels sing

Let the magic warm the moonlit air
Hear the choirs join in singing everywhere
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah Song Meaning:

What a sweet original song from Carrie Underwood, featuring John Legend. Their voices blend beautifully in this message of hope and love. Carrie stated about this album that it was more important than ever to focus on the true meaning of Christmas. This song doesn’t need to be picked apart, as the meaning of the song is clear from the words. Let the world stand still, the church bells ring, silent night as the angels sing, hallelujah. This song is about appreciating the people we have near us, loving the people we love with all we have, and just enjoying the holiday season. Carrie and John really nailed this one!

Carrie Underwood – Sweet Baby Jesus: Lyrics and Meaning

Sweet Baby Jesus is Track 04 on Carrie Underwood’s album My Gift.

Sweet Baby Jesus Song Lyrics:

I wonder were you cold that night
Lying there by Mary’s side
Taking your first breath
I wonder were you scared to death

Fully human, fully God
Full of wonder and the blood
That one day you would shed to save the world
Tiny feet and tiny hands
With all the earth at their command
It must have felt strange to you

Sweet Baby Jesus
Come down to love us
To lie in a manger
So far from home
You could have left us
Helpless and so lost
But you chose to save us
Sweet Baby Jesus

The first time Mary held you close
All wrapped up in tattered clothes
Did you see tears fall from her eyes
Just a mother holding her first child

Fully human, fully God
Full of wonder and the blood
That one day you would shed to save the world
Tiny feet and tiny hands
With all the earth at their command
Oh, it must have been strange to you

Sweet Baby Jesus
Come down to love us
To lie in a manger
So far from home
Oh, you could have left us
Helpless and so lost
But you chose to save us
Sweet Baby Jesus

Sweet Baby Jesus
Come down to love us
To lie in a manger
To die on a cross
Oh, you could have left us
Helpless and so, so lost
But you chose to save us
Sweet Baby Jesus

Sweet Baby Jesus Song Meaning:

Sweet Baby Jesus recaps the birth of Jesus, the newborn King in a similar was as “Mary, Did You Know?”, but more from the perspective of Jesus. Underwood’s song wonders how it must have felt to be the Son of God, yet filled with the blood he would one day shed to save the world. The story of Jesus is awesome to all who hear it, but this song digs deeper into wondering how Jesus must have felt to come to Earth, as nothing more than an innocent baby.

Carrie Underwood – Little Drummer Boy: Lyrics and Meaning

Little Drummer Boy is Track 03 on Carrie Underwood’s album My Gift

Little Drummer Boy Song Lyrics:

Come, they told me
Pa rum pum pum pum
A newborn King to see
Pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring
Pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King
Pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
So, to honor Him
Pa-rum pum pum pum
When we come
Little baby
Pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy, too
Pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring
Pa rum pum pum pum
That’s fit to give our King
Pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Shall I play for you?
Pa rum pum pum pum
On my drum
Mary nodded
Pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time
Pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him
Pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him
Pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Then He smiled at me
Pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum
Me and my drum
Me and my drum

Carrie Underwood – Let There Be Peace: Lyrics and Meaning

Let There Be Peace is Track 02 on Carrie Underwood’s album My Gift.

Let There Be Peace Song Lyrics:

Let there be peace
Peace to every nation
Let there be hope
For all the world to see
Let there be love
And joy to all the children
Let there be peace on earth
For you and me

If I had one wish
On my Christmas list
It wouldn’t be for presents under my tree
There’d be
No more tears for crying
No more wars for fighting
And every mother’s child would have enough to eat

So when I get down on my knees to pray
I ask the Lord above to light the way

Let there be peace
Peace to every nation
Let there be hope
For all the world to see
Let there be love
And joy to all the children
Let there be peace on earth
For you and me

When I look in the mirror
All I want to see
Is true compassion looking back at me
I wanna, I wanna love my neighbor
And be the hands and feet
Of Jesus
Take His love
To the least of these

All I’m asking is to be the change
When I get down on my knees I say

Let there be peace
Peace to every nation
Let there be hope
For all the world to see
Let there be love
And joy to all the children
Let there be peace on earth
For you and me

Let there be peace
Let there be love
Let there be joy
For you and me

Let there be peace
Let there be love
Let there be joy
For you and me
For you and me

Oh…

Let there be peace
Peace to every nation
Let there be hope
For all the world to see
Let there be love
And joy to all the children
Let there be peace on earth
For you and me

Yeah (Peace, peace to every nation)
Let there be hope
For all the world to see
Let there be love
And joy to all the children
Let there be peace on earth
For you and me
(Peace on earth)
For you and me

Let there be peace on earth
For you and me

Let There Be Peace Song Meaning:

Let There Be Peace was written by Carrie Underwood, alongside longtime collaborators Brett James and David Garcia. The song shares a message of hope. Underwood stated in a press release that “it’s more important than ever to focus on the true meaning of Christmas in a project like this.  Even though it has been a tough year for all of us, sometimes I feel like the greatest realizations can be inspired by the most difficult times, and make us more grateful for the things we do have and for what truly matters.” The song shares a message of hope in a time where we all need it.
