Deftones – Genesis: Lyrics & Meaning

Genesis is Track 01 on Deftones’ albums Ohms.

Genesis Song Lyrics:

I reject both sides of what I’m being told
I’ve seen right through, now I watch how wild it gets

I finally achieve
Balance, balance, balance
Approaching a delayed
Rebirth, rebirth, rebirth

I’m positive there’s no sense to what I’m being sold
Yet here I go, I watch how wild we get

Oh can you taste your life
Balanced, balanced, balanced
How will you spend your time
Reborn, reborn, reborn

Climbing out of the ashes
Turning time inside out
We’re miles beyond the sound

We’ll start again
Taste a lifestyle that never gets old
Yet here we go
Just watch how wild it gets

I finally achieve
Balance, balance, balance
Approaching a delayed
Rebirth, rebirth, rebirth

Climbing out of the ashes
We’re turning time inside out
We’re floating off in the ether
We’re miles beyond the sound

We’re everywhere
No need to return
I’ll show you the way

We’re everywhere
No need to return
I’ll show you the way
No need to return

I can show you. Climbing out of the ashes
We’re turning time inside out
Floating into the ether
We’re miles beyond the sounds
Oh, can you taste your life
Balanced, balanced, balanced
How will you spend your time
Reborn

Genesis Song Meaning:

As always Deftones is one of the hardest songs to decipher. Their singer Chino uses many metaphors and paints pictures with his words. But we will give it a shot and would love to hear other opinions.

The opening line “I reject both sides of what I’ve been told” has incredible timing, being that is released in 2020. In this time America’s political divide is greater than ever, with people blaming each side. Although this line can be applied to many things such as religion, and biased news and media.

Genesis, meaning beginning, plays heavy on words such as “reborn/reborn” and says “out of the ashes” much like a phoenix is reborn. Almost as if Deftones is trying to paint a picture of a hibernating state of being, waiting to break back into the world. This is very appropriate considering 2020 is the year of quarantine as well.

Another interesting line is “we’re everywhere, no need to return”. Much like life and work has been delayed for many, this album was delayed a few months. But, even though Deftones loves touring and playing live shows, it can be interpreted as because of online media, their songs will be heard, even if not live.
